A full audience at Calvary Church Santa Ana, California participated in a night of singing of the Odes with John Andrew Schreiner tonight, April 18, 2010. The music was enthusiastically received in worship by the audience of over 500. A video was shot of the evening performance and will be available soon. The promotion in the church bulletine below.

A Night of Singing | Sunday 4.18.10 | 6 pm in the Chapel
about the evening

You’re invited to join us for an evening of worship singing for the whole family featuring the music of THE ODES PROJECT which is new music written for the ODES OF SOLOMON…… first century texts that were discovered less than 100 years ago, and thought to be the first Christian hymnal. The writer/producer of this project will be leading us that evening! It will be about 90 minutes in length and is free to attend.

We’ll have our Celebration Choir, and the choir from Taft Ave. Community Church, and special guest musicians from the ODES recording!

about the project

a CD of this music is available in our bookstore….. more info about the recording and the ODES OF SOLOMON is at: www.theodesproject.com

about the music:

Because this style of singing (antiphonal) is uncommon nowadays, it may take a little time for everyone to feel comfortable in understanding where to come in. But part of the beauty of the ODES is that even though the words are profound in their depth, they are simple to learn. Also, to know that we join in praising God with the hymns of the first Christians gives us a connection to the past and strengthens our identity as people of God.

There are many unique features of the ODES to comment on, but one of the most outstanding characteristics is the immense joy and gratitude expressed to God for sending His Son into the world. Despite the extreme persecution surrounding the early Christians, their music was focused on joyful praise and adoration of God. We can learn today from the example of the early church and, likewise, sing back and forth to each other in wonder, love and praise.

We have been invited to tell play the music and to tell the story of the Odes and the Odes Project and by Haven Ministries. Haven has 500,000 radio listeners a day across the U.S. We will be giving you more details shortly. Please pray for our meeting with Charles Morris this coming Thursday at the Worship Leader Office.

We are also discussing a joint project for distribution of the Odes in the Chinese language. These devotional treasures are a common heritage of our faith !

We are continuing to hear great stories about the “transgenerational” nature of the Odes hymns. They appeal to all generations and are a part of the solution, we feel, to the style wars that have occurred ever since the guitar and drums were introduced to worship over 40 years ago !… PEACE IN SINGING !!! WAS PAUL’S STANDARD..

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. ”

Please upload any videos or other resources that you have used in promoting the Odes to your congregation so we can get these things out to others through facebook and the Odes Blog which will be set up this week.
